About Upo Wetland Natural Preserve

Upo Wetland Natural Preserve, located in Changnyeong County, South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, encompasses approximately 2,310 acres of protected wetland ecosystems. It represents one of the country's most significant wetland areas boasting a mosaic of lakes, reeds, marshes, and shallow water habitats. The wetland's geography is characterized by gently undulating lowlands fed by multiple streams and surrounded by agricultural land, which supports its diverse biotic communities. Ecologically, Upo Wetland is a critical habitat for over 340 species of plants, including many rare and endangered species, as well as over 150 bird species such as the endangered White-naped Crane and the Black-faced Spoonbill. Historically, the wetland has been acknowledged for its environmental importance since the 1980s and was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 1997. Visitors to Upo Wetland can enjoy well-maintained walking trails and birdwatching towers that allow for intimate wildlife observation without disturbing the ecosystem. Notable features include the Upo Marsh Observatory, wetland boardwalks across reed beds, and educational eco-centers that highlight the area's ecological and cultural significance. The preserve is especially popular among eco-tourists and photographers, offering seasonal highlights from migratory bird watching in the spring and autumn to the vibrant fall colors and tranquil winter scenes. Its relatively flat and accessible terrain makes it suitable for casual hikes, bike rides, and guided nature tours, fostering environmental awareness and sustainable recreation.
